The Good, The Bad, The Ugly: The Life and Times of Solomon the King

08/20/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: King Solomon’s life is a story of good, bad, and ugly. He started off well, but ended tragically – like so many people in the pages of Scripture. The challenge for us today is not so much how (or when) we started, but will we finish strong? By God’s grace and our commitment of obedience we can.

A Mother’s Commitment

07/30/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: Samuel is one of the key Old Testament figures in Israel’s history. His story begins with his mother’s broken heart over her barrenness and the amazing commitment she makes to the Lord if he would grant her request for a son. The resulting prayer Hannah offers to the Lord is filled with praise and worship. It is strikingly similar to the song of another woman who miraculously conceives a son

A Call To Faithfulness

07/16/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: When we arrive at the book of Deuteronomy, forty years have passed since the fateful decision at Kadesh-Barnea to not enter the Promised Land, fearful of the giants living there. God’s judgment has run its course, and now the people are poised to fulfill the plan God had for them. But would they be faithful to God and his Word to them? Chapter seven of Deuteronomy is all about faithfulness. In their experience and in Moses’ exhortations, we see our own lives and God’s call to us to be faithful to him and his Word.

God’s Instruction Manual To Israel

07/09/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: Moses leads the people of Israel out of Egypt to the mountain where God had appeared to him through the burning bush. Here God gives to Israel instructions on how they are to live their lives as His people. These instructions include the Civil Law to govern their civic life, the Ceremonial Law to govern their religious life, and the Moral Law to govern their personal life. The question for followers of Christ on this side of the cross and empty tomb is this: How should we view the Law today? The Apostle Paul presents three different ways of relating to the Old Testament Law in Romans, chapter seven.

God’s Got A Plan

07/02/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: In the midst of Israel’s terrible suffering in Egypt, God had a plan – a plan that included redemption, salvation and a man, Moses. God was getting things ready; He was getting a man ready. And in his perfect timing, His plan came to fruition. We need to be reminded, especially during times of difficulty and suffering, that God has a plan. His plan is perfect; His ways are righteous; and His intentions are good.

Breaking the Cycle of Family Dysfunction

06/25/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: One of the remarkable things about the Bible is that there is no attempt to idealize, romanticize or sanitize the lives of individuals filling its pages. People are presented with all their warts, all their inadequacies, and all their failures and foibles. The family of Abraham is a good example. This family history is filled with deceit, trickery, lying, and even attempted murder. But as the story of Joseph, Abraham’s great-grandson, unfolds in the book of Genesis, we see him breaking the cycle of family dysfunction. And how he does that is the same thing required of a believer today: forgiveness.

Jacob: Journey From Deceiving Faith to Authentic Faith

06/18/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: Jacob, the “Deceiver,” becomes Israel, “God rules” or “God prevails.” We see in Scripture, Jacob’s journey to authentic faith as he becomes next-in-line to the covenant promise made to his grandfather Abraham. God’s plans and purposes are sure, and are worked out in the lives of those whom God blesses. We learn that God’s grace is the foundation of our salvation and lives, even as it was for Jacob.

God’s Promise Through Abraham

06/11/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: God calls Abraham to be the start of a new nation, a distinct people. And He makes a covenant with Abraham, a covenant that will embrace the whole world and be fulfilled in Jesus the Messiah. Abraham is asked to believe God, to exercise faith in the promise of God. We too, as believers in Christ, are asked to trust in God who makes promises to us. It wasn’t easy for Abraham to obey, and it is not always easy for us either.

In The Beginning God

06/04/17

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: The Grand Narrative: Creation to Kingdom

Summary: There are three momentous things in the early chapters of the book of Genesis: the Creation, the Fall and a Promise. These three lay the foundation for the rest of human history. After Adam and Eve’s disobedience, God begins a rescue mission to reconcile his creation to himself and to restore Eden. This all comes to its conclusion in Revelation 21 & 22 with the new heaven and new earth; Paradise is restored and ‘Ādām is home.
