Critical Encounters in Jerusalem

03/22/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 12:13–12:34

Summary: During the last days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, he goes toe-to-toe with several religious groups in Jerusalem. It’s like a tag-team match in wrestling. In each instance, every opponent is silenced. There are some great lessons for us as we follow Jesus, lessons based upon Jesus’ words long ago.

“What Therefore God Has Joined Together”

03/15/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 10:1–10:12

Summary: The very first human institution established by God happens at the time around the creation. The crowning point of creation is the first human couple, Adam and Eve. He creates them with the capacity of relationship – relationship with him and relationship with each other. When sin enters the human condition, relational distress and dysfunction results. We are still paying the price today. Marriages are dissolving at an alarming rate. Jesus speaks to the subject of divorce in this passage in Mark’s gospel. We do well to heed his teaching if we desire to live according his plan for our lives.

A Glimpse Of Glory

03/08/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 9:1–9:13

Summary: In the event of the Transfiguration, we see the glory that was within Jesus, the God-man, being unveiled or manifested without. This same reality – transfiguration or transformation – is intended for all believers in Christ because they are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. God’s glory through his Holy Spirit should be more and more evident in one’s life through a change in character and conduct.

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Passage: Mark 8:1–8:21

Summary: One of the great scourges among God’s people throughout the ages has been the affliction of forgetfulness

02/23/20

Speaker: Chris Mendez

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 6:31–6:52

Summary: How you see God impacts how you see everything else. It’s so important that our view of God lines up with what is true about him. In this message, we’ll explore how looking at Jesus is the best way to see God clearly.

Boot Camp

02/16/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 6:6–6:32

Summary: In Mark, chapter six, we see the disciples in their ministry boot camp. Jesus sends them out, two-by-two, with his authority and his power, to proclaim the kingdom of heaven. They are to go as an extension of Jesus’ ministry. And this is the same calling we have as disciples of Jesus today, following in the footsteps of the Twelve, proclaiming repentance, and salvation by God’s grace through Christ.

In The Storms Of Life

02/09/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 4:35–4:41

Summary: Every one of us has faced, are facing, or will face a storm in life: perhaps a broken relationship, a deep disappointment, a debilitating illness, a wave of depression, a bitter experience

Parables

02/02/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 4:1–4:20

Summary: Jesus often spoke in parables. In the words of Dr. Roy Zuck: a parable is a story “thrown alongside the truth to illustrate the truth.” Before looking at the “Parable of the Sower” in Mark chapter four, we’ll consider “Five Guidelines of Interpreting Parables” in Dr. Zuck’s book Basic Bible Interpretation.

Controversy and Choice

01/26/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 2:23–3:19

Summary: Jesus was angry and grieved at the self-righteousness and hypocrisy of the Pharisees. He ran into their judgmentalism and legalism at every turn during his ministry. But Jesus was about his Father’s business and would not be deterred. As his ministry developed, he began to narrow his focus by selecting twelve men to be apostles, to be with him and to share his life. It would be to these men he would entrust the founding of the Church and expand his kingdom.

Prejudice and Tradition

01/19/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 2:13–2:22

Summary: Prejudice – it’s ugly; it’s wrong; and it’s not new. We see it front and center in the lives and views of the Pharisees. We also see how “tradition” became the foundation of a self-righteousness exhibited by these same Jews. Jesus addressed both of these things head-on, further leading to confrontation between him and the religious establishment.

Authority on Display

01/12/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 1:9–1:34

Summary: The fourth witness to the identity of Jesus given by Mark at the beginning of his Gospel is that of God the Father. And in the giving of the Spirit at Jesus’ baptism, there is a wonderful application and parallel to God’s giving of the Spirit to every person who believes in Jesus. Mark then begins to demonstrate the authority of Jesus in his life and ministry. Here in Mark, chapter one, we see his authority over Satan, over men, and over spirits.

Who Is this Guy?

01/05/20

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Rediscovering Jesus

Passage: Mark 1:1–1:8

Summary: The question desperately needing to be answered today as it was over 2000 years ago is: Who is Jesus? As Mark opens his Gospel account, he provides witnesses as to the identity of Jesus of Nazareth. But we must also answer the question: Can I believe the Biblical account of this man and his ministry? Can I have confidence that what I read in this Gospel, as well as the entire Bible, is really accurate and true?
